Inside the Implementation: Connecting the Dots in Complex Procurement

10-1

By Kate Jeter, Director of Field Marketing

Procurement transformations succeed when vision meets execution; but in fragmented organizations, that means bridging silos, subprocesses, and systems that no single tool can handle alone. That’s where ORO’s implementation experts shine: configuring orchestration to handle seamless, end-to-end journeys impossible with rigid, standalone platforms.

In this edition of Inside the Implementation, we feature Conor Slight and Hamza Nadeem from the ORO implementation team. Conor brings more than 8 years of experience in source-to-pay, from in-house roles at Legal & General and Deliveroo, to configuring ORO for digital transformations. Hamza shifted from finance and consulting at Accenture to running accelerators with ORO, including intense projects with leading life science enterprises. Together, they’ve turned chaotic processes into orchestrated flows, highlighting what makes ORO uniquely powerful.

Vision Comes Alive Through Live Demos

Early workshops often reveal sprawling processes that teams can’t always fully explain. Conor recalls mapping a strategic sourcing project recently where “the project lead was developing new subprocesses and teams, creating uncertainty about where they each fit.”

The team captured notes, configured a sample solution in ORO, and demonstrated it in the next session. “We visualized connecting all of the subprocesses; risk assessments, legal reviews, stakeholder gates, and walked through a live journey,” Conor says. On-the-fly tweaks showed dynamic routing: a high risk supplier triggering parallel compliance checks, data auto-passing to P2P without re-entry.

This “art of the possible” really clicked: unlike linear tools, orchestration enabled the organization to reimagine sourcing as a connected web, with subprocesses firing conditionally (for example, with geo-risk flags escalating to legal), only brought to life with ORO’s flexible layer over existing ERPs and risk platforms.

Quick Wins that Reshape Perspectives

Quick wins build momentum by proving orchestration’s edge over rigid requirements capture. Hamza shares from a life science implementation: “In the first 30 days, I set up standard buying channels; MVP style, outputting channels based on factors including category and risk.”

Clients visualized it, and then iterated: “They went back in-house, adapted their thinking, and gave us precise tweaks.” What started as catalogs evolved into intelligent channels, low-risk lab supplies being fast-tracked, high-risk clinical vendors routed through supplier onboarding with auto risk-scoring.

Conor adds: “Configuring quickly changes perspectives; clients realize new journeys, like embedding data private gates mid-sourcing.” In one case, a POC demo shifted a client’s intake to auto-pull contract history, slashing duplicates; capabilities that legacy P2P can’t orchestrate across silos.

Leading Through Major Pivots

Mid-project pivots test teams, but ORO experts thrive on collaboration and challenge. Hamza describes a 2025 crunch point: “We built out the solution through the summer, but there came a point when a massive change hit every step, with integrations imploding.”

With an agile team, they went onsite: “Being in the room, running test scenarios, making changes, immediately built huge confidence with the clients.” Orchestration absorbed the shift - re-routing workflows to sync new ERP data, enforcing updated risk logic (for example, sanction checks pre-PO), delivering go-live despite intensity. “They’re super happy now,” Hamza notes. Only orchestration’s adaptability made this pivot seamless, not a rip-and-replace nightmare.

Diagnosing, and Fixing, Fragmented Chaos

Fragmentation in procurement tech stacks is rampant: disjoined sourcing from P2P, risk/privacy in separate platforms, requestors re-entering data endlessly. Conor has been stunned: “No one could explain the full end-to-end process, pulling in additional teams to clarify fragmented processes across the enterprise.”

Diagnosis focused on the business requestor: as-is demonstrations, journey mapping, data timing, intake vs. mid-process, and system syncs. “The goal: orchestrate end-to-end without replacing existing systems,” Conor says. ORO connected them, a business request auto-feeding risk data to sourcing, then P2P with full visibility and guidance.

Hamza echoes the importance of risk processes, “Many clients have made this up on the go. We provide a logical framework with conditional steps.” They then co-create: intake triggering tiered assessments, parallel to approvals, crystallizing processes that legacy tools left manual and invisible.

The Thrill of Pushing the Limits

Gratification? Solving the unsolvable. Conor shared that “Clients think of what’s possible, we explore, share ideas, and then demonstrate something brand new for them, like custom risk triggers pulling live ERP data.”

Hamza continues, “Fixing technical knots across teams and seeing outputs instantly, and clients thrilled” is hugely satisfying. ORO’s expertise turns “How?” into “Done,” configuring on-the-fly subprocesses for strategic sourcing, something that only ORO’s no-code flexibility enables.

These moments truly showcase ORO implementers as the technical wizards they are: not just configuring, but strategists re-coding procurement.

Implementation as a Catalyst for Orchestrated Change

Implementation proves orchestration’s edge: no more silos or spaghetti workflows; ORO connects ERPs, risk tools, P2P into a single governed flow. Requestor data flows once, subprocesses (risk, privacy, sourcing) trigger intelligently, and visibility guides every step.

Clients discover impossibilities made real, including strategic sourcing with embedded compliance, pivots without rebuilds, that legacy platforms can’t match. For Conor and Hamza, it’s the journey of exploration and impact: configuring novel paths, fixing chaos, delighting clients. Go-Live? Anticlimatic. True wins? End-to-end harmony that only orchestration delivers, powered by experts who make it happen.
